A BRITISH high jump star has congratulated the successful Passport 2K programme for disadvantaged young people in Bolton.
Steve Smith told organisers that youngsters who took part were not only being given a chance to have a go at new activities, but gain the self confidence which comes from having done something different.
Passport 2K is using the stimulus of the region's hosting of the Commonwealth Games to provide young people, especially those who are disadvantaged through race, disability or other reasons, with a chance to take part in activities and events they might not have been able to access.
Through Passport 2K, thousands of 11 to 18 year olds have travelled to activities in their home towns and around the region. Groups from all over the North West sampled the delights of the orient in Manchester's Chinatown, enjoyed water sports and sports jamborees in Liverpool and took part in a Passport Fun Day in Heywood.
