FOLLOWING Horwich RMI Harriers' final fixture in this season's Cheshire League, their Under 11s were crowned champions in their first season in this league.
With 18 clubs in the league, the Horwich Juniors have won all four of their matches, with the girls in particular having outstanding success. In the final fixture at Salford the girls team finished the day on maximum points, having won every event and having beaten teams from Salford, Deeside, St Helens, Colwyn Bay and Handforth. The Under 11s won with 91 points, ahead of the home club, Salford, on 67.
Some of the highlights included the wins for Lucy Hindley, Alyce Eccles, Kirsty Hair and Catherine Eccles in the 80m sprint. It was four out of four for the girls in the 600m, with wins for Hindley, Eccles (A), Leanne Fisher and Eccles (C). In addition, the 4x100m relay team of Hindley, Chidi Onwudike, Hair and Eccles (A), romped home in first place, in a time of 62.7.
For the boys, Jack Thomas and Thomas Carr finished in first place in their 80m races, with identical times of 12.4. In addition, Carr won the long jump with a best of 3.38m.
RMI Harriers Rob Jackson and Colin Rigby finished well up the field in the Manchester Marathon. With over 1,500 entries and 1,085 finishers the marathon course which is to be used for the 2002 Commonwealth Games was well and truly tested.
Rob's excellent 15th place and Colin's 22nd put both Harriers within the qualifying time of 2 hours 45 minutes for the AAA National Championships at London next April.
Despite a high placing Rob was slightly disappointed with his time of 2.40.33 as he felt he could have run 10 minutes quicker.
The third RMI Harrier to complete the course was Barry Allman who, despite being ill in bed on Thursday and Friday before the race, finished in 4 hours 30 minutes.
RMI Harrier Nigel Clementson ran a superbly judged Southport five mile road race to claim a well-deserved sixth place.
Nigel was second vet 40 on the flat and fast finishing seaside course. The race, which forms part of the Central Lancs Grand Prix Series saw 14 RMI Harriers enjoy dry but windy conditions.
Second Horwich counter was Dave Townsend who had a fine run with Terry Orrell (first Vet 45) running well and being Horwich's third finisher. The usual gutsy performance from Steve Jackson made him the team's final counter and enabled Horwich to claim third men's team.
The RMI Ladies were led home by Carolyn Hunter-Rowe who was ably backed up by Liz Smart and Christine Sweatman enabling the team to take second place behind Wigan Phoenix.
