THIS was an entertaining musical. The songs are catchy and enjoyable, and the storyline light and fun.

A talented cast brought the play to life, with Carmela Horne playing the leading role of Mame.

Special mention must go to Alice Bowmer in her role of Mame's wayward best friend, Vera. But the real star of this show was young Ryan Quick, who played 10-year-old Patrick Dennis, Mame's nephew. He gave a terrific performance, singing and acting with panache.

The young chorus of dancers also performed brilliantly.

Mention must go to choreographer Louise Cohen. Her routines were complicated, but worked well on a small stage.

Overall this is an ambitious musical to stage and St Catherine's must be applauded for its efforts.

Obstacles include assembling a large cast, but above all else there are a massive number of scene changes. And if anything, it was the latter which proved a slight struggle last night.

There are 16 scenes in the two acts and most required some form of change. This unfortunately all took time, in what was already a lengthy play lasting three hours. On occasion the switches of scenery also caused a little too much background noise when the action continued in front of the curtain.

However, this did not detract too much from the overall entertainment of an otherwise pleasant production. Beverly Greenberg
