IF Samba FC find themselves struggling this season they can always turn to their latest recruit - Jairzinho.

The Pioneer Sunday League outfit, who fashion themselves on Brazil, landed a real coup when they snapped up a former World Cup legend - on a free transfer.

The great Jairzinho, who scored in every round of the 1970 World Cup, which included a stunner against England, has been signed on by the First Division pacesetters, who are based at Atherton LR.

"It is only for a bit of fun but I have registered Jairzinho to play for the team," said player-manager Mark Price.

"He is 57 years-old now so I don't think he will actually turn out for us, but you never know.

"He came over to Wigan Athletic to help set-up a player-exchange with their academy and as a Brazil fanatic I met him.

"I could not believe it when he gave me nearly two hours of his time. He was very impressed with the set-up we have at Samba and agreed to become our honorary president, which was great."

Jairzinho, who played alongside fellow legend Pele and has expressed a desire to be manager of the struggling Brazilian first team, was amazed when he read a cutting from the BEN which highlighted the fanatical way Samba FC follow their South American heroes.

They try to emulate the Brazilian look and style and it is paying dividends this season as they are top of their league with six wins from six games.

Price was also thrilled in the summer when the Brazilian U17s team took on England at the Reebok and he was invited on to the pitch.

"I met the Brazilian captain and he gave me his armband which is the only accessory you can't buy in the shop. The Samba captain now wears it in every game," he added.
