I HAVE just learned that the property known as Cleveland House, on Chorley New Road, Bolton, which I understand belongs to the Bolton Town Council, is scheduled for demolition and the area redeveloped.
I have written to you before on this topic and consider it a great shame that this link with Bolton's industrial past is to go. The Walmsley family set up and continued the Atlas Forge from 1820 to 1986 and Thomas Mather Walmsley was Mayor of Bolton in 1869/70 and 1871. The fact that, in 1881, Mr and Mrs. Walmsley lived at Cleveland with five children and seven servants indicates the type of lifestyle they enjoyed.
