A TOTAL of 36,000 ecstasy tablets -- with a street value of £250,000 -- have been seized in a police raid on a Bolton home.

The drugs were discovered by to 20 officers who forced their way into a house in Ainsworth Lane, Tonge Moor.

They also uncovered two and a half kilos of cannabis and half a kilo of white powder. Police believe the drugs haul, particularly the ecstasy tablets, were destined for revellers throughout the North-west in the run-up to Christmas. Officers from the drugs squad were supported by uniformed colleagues in the raid. A 29-year-old man was arrested and is due to be interviewed by detectives today. The substantial haul will now undergo forensic tests to confirm exactly what they are. Supt Don Brown, of Bolton police, said: "It should not be ignored that abuse of these types of drugs can have fatal consequences.

"This is yet another major seizure in Bolton in response to concerns from members of the community about drug dealing. It is yet another indication of our determination to disrupt this illicit market."

Last June, a 15-year-old schoolgirl was found collapsed in Sandhurst Drive, Breightme,t after she drank half a bottle of vodka with an ecstasy tablet.

In April, a 14-year-old was rushed to the Royal Bolton after taking two ecstasy tablet in a playground at Thornleigh Salesian College, Astley Bridge.

Both teenagers made a full recovery.

Supt Brown added: "We will continue to remain vigilant and if any members of the public are concerned they should contact us directly or through the confidential Crimestoppers hotline."
