TOP Government ministers will hold a soccer violence "summit" tonight at the house of Commons, following Saturday's clash between Aston Villa and Glasgow Rangers' fans during a friendly match which was abandoned after a pitch invasion.

ONE of the worst droughts to hit the North-west officially came to an end today. Restrictions on car washing, playing field watering and the use of hoses have been lifted throughout the region.

BOLTON housewives who like to make their own rugs, but have found the task irksome, will welcome the news that a new rugmaking machine, which cuts the wool as it stitches, is now on sale in local shops. Its price is 42s 6d. The old type of machine which is worked on the same principle but leaves the wool on loops so that it has to be cut afterwards by hand, can still be bought for 32s 6d.

October 11, 1876

ON Monday last, the engines belonging to the Bolton Union Spinning Company, Limited, which have been made by Messrs Hick, Hargreaves, and Co., and erected at the company's mill, Tong, were started and christened in the presence of a large number of gentlemen, who had been invited to be present on the occasion,

At the time appointed, Mr George Ryder, the chairman of the company, and Mr John Cowans, vice-chairman, turned on the steam, and amidst the cheers of those assembled the chairman christened one engine "Union" and the vice-chairman the other "Strength".

A CORRESPONDENT writes that he saw a root of potatoes at Rivington with 74 sound and perfect potatoes.

GEORGE SWINDLEY, Lostock, was fined 20 shillings, and costs, at the Borough Court, for having trespassed in search of game at Rumworth, on the 2nd. inst.
