TAXI drivers who fear they will become victims of attacks and robberies are being urged to install high-tech security cameras in their cars to catch the culprits in action.

An Essex-based security firm visited Chorley Town Hall to demonstrate a range of crime-cracking equipment they could use.

Police also attended the event, which Chorley Borough Council has organised in response to safety concerns voiced by both Hackney cab and private hire drivers operating in the town.

Councillor Ralph Snape, chairman of licensing, said: "One or two taxi drivers in Chorley have been attacked by the yob element recently. There is also a problem with people running off without paying.

"These cameras will help provide the police with evidence. They are also there for the drivers' own protection.

"We hold regular consultations with taxi drivers and we know it is an issue of great concern to them. That is why we have organised this demonstration."

About 30 taxi and cab drivers are expected to attend the meeting.

John McKenna, chairman of Chorley Hackney Cab Owners Association, is reserving judgement on the equipment until it has been fully inspected.

He added: "We are going to have a look and are keeping an open mind about it. We will see what the police and others have to say.

"I don't know how much it costs, only that we will have to pay for it if we do want it."

Julie Price, of Yellow Cabs, Chorley, has already seen security cameras in operation at a private hire show.

She added: "They are really good because they give extra security. I suppose a lot depends on cost."
