PEOPLE are being urged to become more aware of meningitis and septicaemia by using a chart which explains what symptons to look for.
Julia Ingham-Middleton, of Bolton, lost her father to pneumococcal meningitis last September and is warning people that this frightening disease can strike at any age -- but knowing the signs and symptoms are a sure way of improving survival rates.
Mrs Ingham-Middleton said: "My father was 56 when he died. It is so important that people realise that meningitis and septicaemia are indiscriminate diseases that strike irrespective of age.
"I fully support the Meningitis Research Foundation's awareness campaign in the hope that people will get up to speed with meningitis."
The meningitis "C" vaccine has been introduced in Bolton schools and communities over the last year, but as yet, there are no obvious vaccines for other forms of the disease.
Denise Vaughan, chief executive of the Meningitis Research Foundation, said: "Too many people still experience the devastation of meningitis and septicaemia.
"By offering free symptoms information to everyone, we hope lives will be saved.
"Early diagnosis and prompt treatment really do give patients the best chance for a good recovery."
