A FIRM has been fined £25,000 by Bolton Magistrates Court after being prosecuted by the council's health and safety unit.

Castle Builders of Little Lever was prosecuted under the Health and Safety at work Act 1974 after an accident last year left an employee with debilitating injuries and difficulty obtaining further work.

Joseph Burns was collecting stone flags in the builders merchants yard when a pallet of stone flags next to him fell, trapping his left leg.

He suffered a fractured leg and damage to his calf muscle.

The company admitted all offences including matters relating to the safe storage of articles and the provision of information, instruction, training and supervision to employees.

A previous inspection by the council had advised that health and safety policy required improving and that attention was required to poor housekeeping, including the safe stacking of pallets.

Bolton Council executive member for the environment Cllr Guy Harkin said: "I would commend the services of the Health and Safety Section to any business requiring health and safety advice or face similar consequences."
