A COURT witness who claimed a man had offered to sell her drugs was branded a "deceitful, dishonest and despicable" liar yesterday.
Giving evidence, Samantha Miller said that she was with four friends at a bus station when Scott Springhall asked if she wanted to buy methadone and temazepam.
She admitted she had found out on the morning of the trial that one of her four friends, Karen Derbyshire, had made a new statement saying they had made up their story to protect one of the women.
Yesterday Springhall, aged 29, of Nel Pan Lane, Leigh, appeared at Bolton Crown Court for trial.
He denied offering prescription methadone and temazepam to Samantha Miller on November 16 last year.
Prosecuting, William Gregg said Miller was at Leigh Bus Station when Springhall allegedly asked her if she wanted to buy his prescription methadone and some temazepam tablets.
When Springhall was arrested and charged he told police the girls had asked him for drugs because they recognised him from a previous incident when he had been beaten up by one of the girl's boyfriends.
Barrister Richard Orme, for Springhall, said that Karen Derbyshire "had the decency and confidence to stop something before it gets out of control".
He added: "I suggest to you that you are deceitful, dishonest and despicable for what you are doing and I suggest that you are lying." Miller denied she had made the story up.
