A BOLTON woman involved with flower arranging for 30 years has taken the country's top post.
Gillian Platt from Harwood has just been appointed chairman of the National Association of Floral Societies.
She was vice chairman for the past two years and is well-known for her skills in the North-west.
The jewel in the crown of her chairmanship will be the World Flower Show next summer in Glasgow -- an event unlikely to return to this country in decades.
"It's a wonderful opportunity and opens a window on the world," she said.
But her greatest ambition for her two-year term of office is to attract new lifeblood for the NAFAS.
"We need to have a membership drive and move forward -- but we do have some very dedicated people.
"We are looking for a happy medium with contemporary flower designers and traditional ones within the movement. We also need to get our association recognised in the outside world."
And Gillian is as passionate as ever about her art, still putting on demonstrations. "Flower arranging just opens up a new world."
With her new position, she has also taken up residency at the London head office -- based in a Victorian House -- for four days a week.
Sharing the officers' quarters also means sharing one shower -- and having to descend 106 steps to it.
But that does not dampen Gillian's spirits -- as she is still overwhelmed with her promotion.
"I never, ever thought I would be national chair," she said.
"But after two years, I might just have a little rest -- and spend some time with my new granddaughters.
"Also I will spend more time with my long-suffering husband!
"It's a busy life. But it is very enjoyable brings so much pleasure to so many people. BLOOMING MARVELLOUS: Gillian Platt is in the chair (g1384/11)
