Horwich Harriers HORWICH RMI Harriers were out in force at the first race in the Red Rose XC League, held at Wilson playing fields in Bury last Saturday.
The warm autumn afternoon saw a dry course, although there were patches of deep sticky mud in places.
Both Horwich's men and ladies got off to a tremendous start in this season's campaign, with Jason Hodgson leading from the front to record a brilliant win in the senior men's race. Jan Rashleigh finished second overall and first vet in the ladies race, narrowly missing out on a double first for Horwich.
In the junior races, Horwich's highest placed finisher was Katherine Cole, who was third U17, running the same course and distance as the senior ladies.
With over 50 Horwich RMI competitors in this fixture, their red vests were clearly out to start the season with a bang. Victory for the senior ladies, veteran ladies and veteran men's teams bodes well for the forthcoming races in both the Red Rose and SE Lancs Leagues.
Today sees the start of the SE Lancs League at Rochdale, when no doubt the Harriers will again be out in large numbers.
Horwich RMI Harrier Nigel Clementson showed his fellow competitors a clean pair of heels at the recent Blackburn Duathlon, finishing over 1 minutes ahead of second place (second place actually being a combined team). His margin over the next individual competitor in third place, was an impressive 2 mins 25 secs.
The 5K run took in part of the Roddlesworth Roller Course, and was therefore a trail route, with the 20K bike section seeing the competitors riding into a stiff head wind towards Tockholes with a following wind back to Darwen and Abbey Village.
Vet/50 Tony Hesketh was an impressive first in his category yet again, in 22nd place overall. Horwich's other three competitors were Sue Jones, who had another good effort as she finished second lady, Carolyn Wright a superb first lady Vet/40 and Sara Smith, seventh lady and 87th overall.
Unfortunately fellow Horwich Harrier Jack Foulds had to finish his effort after the first 5K run. RESULTS: Results Blackburn Duathlon (run 5K, bike 5K, run 5K) -- 1.
