DOES your newspaper have room for some good local news?

By giving up their time and energy to train, and then work to help others, Bolton people are making a difference to homelessness in the town.

They're enabling individuals to find and retain accommodation, and establish useful links in the community.

Members of Bolton Quaker Meeting enjoyed an excellent talk from Sinead O'Conner, representing the Bolton Bond Board. The Board, which guarantees deposits for tenants in private accommodation, was a leader in its field when established in 1993 -- only the third in the country.

Its work has grown from a financial bridging scheme to get over the "no address, no benefit, no rent" trap, in which many people found themselves, and has since developed a personal support element which is bringing satisfaction on all sides.

All is not rosy, and the Board draws attention to obstacles to the search for housing, besides helping individuals through official tangles.

Boltonians have subscribed generously over the years, both for the bonds and for the start-up fund, which helps to provide essential items for people setting up home.

We were impressed by what is being achieved in Bolton, and glad to have been supporters from an early age.
