THE former chairman of the Bolton Evening News has received his prestigious 50-year membership of Rotary award.
Marcus Tillotson, aged 86, was chairman of the company which owned the BEN from 1956 to 1971. His grandfather, William F Tillotson, founded the newspaper on March 19, 1867.
Over the years, Mr Tillotson's roles in the town have included chairman of Trustees of Bolton School, chairman of the Board of Management of Bolton YMCA and Justice of the Peace from 1957 to 1985.
He has been a devoted member of Bolton Rotary Club, raising funds for charities including Vision Aid, Victim Support and Bolton Hospice.
Achievements
His 50-year membership award is the latest of his many achievements. He was recently presented with a piece of engraved crystal ware at the Man of the Year Awards as a special award for a lifetime of dedication to the town.
He was picked for the accolade by the former Mayor, Cllr Alan Wilkinson.
He has also been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship Award -- the highest award that Rotary International can give.
Alan Riding, president of Bolton Rotary Club said: "He is the most gentle, kind man you could ever meet. He is an amiable character and a perfect, polished gentleman.
"He has been privileged and has had a very good start in life, but he has never been selfish with it. He has always been very generous and has helped many charities. He is a very good benefactor for the town."
