PARENTS are going back to school - to do a spot of painting, after hearing that funds are too low to cover the cost of having the job done professionally. White Horse Primary School, Westhoughton, is a church school, and responsible for the maintenance of the exterior rests with the managers. Now the parents are doing the task in their spare time.

A NEW mode of dealing with drunken parents was put into operation by the Liverpool stipendiary magistrate on Saturday. He had before him a young dissipated-looking couple, who were charged with shameful neglect of their infant child, which was found in the house perfectly nude, whilst the mother was in gaol for drunkenness. The clothing of the child had been pawned.

The house was in a most filthy and destitute state, and the poor infant was dirty and emaciated. The husband, it was stated, was earning at least 30s a week. Instead of sending the wretched couple to gaol, Mr Raffles offered to suspend judgment on condition that both took the pledge and kept it. He undertook that they should be carefully watched, and in the event of wither relapsing in drunken habits, that sentence should be passed for the offence of which they had just been convicted.
