MAILBAG thief Imran Sarwar's daylight robberies were stamped out after an alert postman raised the alarm.

Bury magistrates heard how Sarwar, aged 20, and another man snatched the mailbag after striking up a conversation with the postman at Lowther Street, Prestwich, at 7am.

Mr Martin McRobb, prosecuting, said that just 24 hours later, this time around Simister Lane, Prestwich, postman Stephen Balshaw, who was aware of the robbery, became suspicious when he spotted a car following him. He alerted his manager and they set up a trap by leaving the mailbag on the porch. Two men were then seen taking it away.

Sarwar was stopped and immediately admitted his part in the theft. He pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing a mailbag and quantity of mail and was given four months imprisonment in a Young Offenders Institution.
