I HAVE read the article about the litter near Farnworth Cemetery, and looked, astounded, at the picture of the women clearing it away. Why do they not ring the police and get them to make the vandals clear it? I know what you are going to say - that the police will not do anything about it - well this is the trouble.

We, including the police, are too afraid to check anybody doing wrong these days, in case we ourselves get into trouble. When we were young, a clip around the ear, or sometimes just a word in the ear, was usually enough to stop the bother. It's the same with the mindless ones who break telephone kiosks - they should be made to repair them.
