WHILE agreeing with every word that top surgeon Tony Banks says about patients blocking hospital beds because nursing home places are no longer available, I would argue that they are getting full board, not bed and breakfast.
Full board of a very high standard -- three meals a day (with a varied menu), morning coffee, afternoon tea, and a milky bedtime drink. All delivered by smiling, friendly, caring people.
I was recently discharged from ward G4, and can honestly say, in spite of major knee surgery, the whole experience was enjoyable, from pre-admission onwards. The ward was spotless thanks to James the cleaner, and the food was excellent, with a visit on the ward from the catering manager to make sure we were all happy with the meals on offer.
My nursing care was wonderful -- nothing was too much trouble, pain relief was given at regular intervals and the nurses were always kind and considerate. They kept their sense of humour, even though they were caring for some very sick patients in stressful situations. Some had to work double shifts because of staffing problems, and must have been totally exhausted, but they never complained.
The Royal Bolton Hospital has had a bed press recently, but it's time we gave praise where it is due. I cannot speak too highly of the wonderful care I received, and thank Mr Banks and his dedicated team most sincerely.
