CHORLEY MP Lindsay Hoyle said he has received assurances that a military aircraft project will go ahead despite problems with Italian production.

The A400M is a project between Britain, Italy, Germany, and France. Recent reports said the Italian government was due to abandon its involvement, casting doubt over the whole programme, which is expected to bring thousands of jobs to the area.

During questions in the House of Commons, Mr Hoyle asked Geoff Hoon, secretary of state for defence, for reassurances.

The MP said: "I was delighted with the reply. The project will bring thousands of jobs to the North West and act as a major boost for the regional economy.

"The decision to press ahead with the project regardless of the news from Italy has re-affirmed this Government's commitment to the British aerospace sector."

Mr Hoyle also welcomed the news that the Joint Strike Fighter had been won by Lockhead Martin bringing more job security to the region.
