BOLTON Council's award for the way it attempting to reduce waste, pollution and emissions has been welcomed by green chiefs.

Councillor Guy Harkin, Executive Member for Environment was delighted that Bolton had won the Green Apple award.

"We've taken a long, hard look at what the Council does to see how we can reduce our own waste and emissions and raise recycling rates. With a mixture of new technology and careful planning we are hoping that our commitment to the MACC2 (Making a Corporate Commitment) scheme and Environmental Strategy will help raise the profile of environmental issues both within the Council and the wider community and set a good example for other organisations."

The Green Apple Awards aim to recognise and reward good environmental practice and Bolton was successful because it was the first North West authority to sign up to the MACC2 initiative and for its Corporate Environmental Strategy which sets targets for waste and energy reduction, reducing pollution and greener transport.

More than 180 authorities entered the award with Bolton being awarded: Metropolitan Borough Council National Winner England National Winner British Champion 2001.
