COMMUNITY ambassadors have been awarded for their work with a national project which helps parents and children.

Sure Start is a project which helps to improve the quality of life for people with children under four years old, living in underprivileged areas in Halliwell and Great Lever.

The project is funded by the Government and helps give people a chance to make a difference to their community.

The ambassadors, who completed their training at Bolton Community College, were Christine Walsh, Quemmer Mahmood, Denise Jones, Leanne Hardman, Suzanne Turner, Leah Elcock, Sylvia Scotland, Georgia Cameron, Suzanne Middlebrook, Bernadette Weaver, Monica Gayle, Gillian Hamilton and Kim Atherton.

They were all presented with certificates at a special presentation at the college's Clarence Street centre.

Project co-ordinator Helen McHugh, who trained the staff with colleague Jeanette Fowler, said: "They will now be going out in the community dealing with issues related to bringing up children under four years old."

It is hoped the project will be available in two other areas in the future.
