THIS year is the 80th Anniversary of the Royal British Legion and more people than ever are approaching the Legion for help.

The Organisation provides financial, social and emotional support to millions and its benevolence spans all age groups from the oldest to the very young.

Armistice Day falls on the same day as Remembrance Sunday this year, making it very appropriate for us to take the time to stop and remember all those who sacrificed so much for us during times of conflict.

It is comforting to know that all those affected by conflict have an organisation such as the Legion to call upon and I would like to urge the people of Bolton to support this year's Poppy Appeal. Thanks to the generosity of the public, last year's Poppy Appeal raised more than £20 million to help those in need and ensure the caring service delivered by the Legion can continue to assist the ex-service community.

I would also like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to everyone in the borough to join me on Victoria Square for the Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday Service which is to be held on November 11 commencing just before 11am. Maroons will be fired to mark the beginning and end of the two minutes silence.

Thank you.
