FIREFIGHTERS in Bolton were called out 60 times during a busy Bonfire Night.

Crews reported no serious incidents, but said they were constantly attending minor problems across the town.

And police say they had more than 20 calls from the public complaining about youths causing annoyance with fireworks but no one was injured and no damage was caused.

There were many calls to the fire service from members of the public concerned about burning bonfires getting out of control, as well as car and rubbish fires.

The trend was similar throughout Greater Manchester, with the service reporting more than 500 calls in total from 6pm yesterday to 7.30am today.

Sub Officer Nick Pyne, of Farnworth station's green watch, said the crews had been called out 23 times.

He added: "It was a very busy night, absolutely hectic.

"Our first engine went out at 6.15pm and did not return to the station until 10pm."

Crews at Bolton Central were also busy and were called out about 25 times.

Bolton North, based on Crompton Way, responded to 15 emergencies.

Eccles firefighters were also called to Little Hulton and Walkden to deal with bonfires and cars which had been set alight.

At 1.15pm yesterday firefighters had to smash down the front door of a house in Deane after a firework was pushed through the letterbox.

The crew put out a small fire in the house in Jessie Street. Children are being blamed for the incident.

A neighbour had dialled 999 after spotting smoke billowing from a ventilation grid in the wall. Nobody was inside the rented house at the time.

Leigh firefighters were called to control a bonfire in Eva Crescent at about 6.15pm. Furniture had been thrown on to the fire and it threatened to get out of control.

Only one man needed hospital treatment last night as a result of the bonfire night celebrations. He was suffering minor head injuries. This compares to nine last year, which included seven children.
