BOLTON Symphony Orchestra performs a Concert for Armistice Day on Sunday, November 11, 7.30pm, at the Albert Halls, Bolton.

The orchestra will perform Elgar's cello concerto and works by Brahms and Britten.

Conductor Stephen Threlfall, director of music at Chetham's School in Manchester, will take the podium.

He studied with maestros Yan Pascal Tortelier and Vassily Sinaisky, and participated in the Leeds International Conductor's Competition. Stephen's work with professional orchestras includes Northern Chamber and BBC Philharmonic. His performances have taken him all over the Europe and to Russia, as guest conductor with the Urals Philharmonic.

Elgar's cello concerto was made famous by tragic cellist Jacqueline de Pre and will be performed by rising star Rebecca Hewes. She is a former pupil of Chetham's and now studies at the Royal Northern College of Music.

The concert will start with Benjamin Britten's Suite on English Folk Songs and end with Brahms' Symphony No 2.

The orchestra was reformed in 1993 and attracts players from Bolton, as well as throughout the North-west. It is led by former Halle first violin, Gerald Hopkin, and enjoys a fine reputation.

Tickets, £6 and £4 concessions, are available on the door or in advance from Bolton Ticket and Information Centre at the Albert Halls, telephone 334400. CONDUCTER: Stephen Threlfall
