AN international expert on waste disposal is hoping he will be able to change the way people in Bolton empty their bins.

Robin Murray and his team have been analysing information about rubbish across the county and hope to increase the amount of waste used for recycling and composting.

This will take the strain off landfill sites and mean new incinerators will not have to be built.

The expert, who works for consultants Ecologika, is the author of the book Creating Wealth from Waste, which shows how councils can make money and create jobs from the way they deal with household items thrown away.

His ideas have also helped local authorities in Canada and Europe improve the way their systems work.

Some have seen an increase in recycling and composting levels of more than 50 per cent.

Neil Swannick, the chairman of the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, said he was very excited to secure the service of Mr Murray.

He added: "He is a leading advocate of the new approach to waste management.

"I believe there is already significant public support for recycling and composting as a way forward which reduces landfill and avoids building incinerators."

As well as working abroad, Mr Murray has produced a strategy for the London planning advisory committee and similar plans for Essex and Lancashire.

Ecologika's report will be presented to the Waste Disposal Authority on Friday, December 7.
