A FLAG has been flying above Bolton Town Hall this week during the countdown to Remembrance Sunday.

The standard highlights the annual poppy appeal organised by the Royal British Legion.

An exhibition recalling Bolton's fallen heroes is also on display -- thanks to the work of a secondary school teacher.

Steve Irwin, who teaches science at Rivington and Blackrod High School, researched the lives of 120 men listed in the Parish Memorial at St Luke's Church, who died in battle between 1914 and 1918.

The exhibition, Remembered: A Parish At War 1914 - 1919, is on display at St Luke's, Chorley Old Road, until tomorrow.

Mr Irwin said he organised the exhibition after he became curious about the lives behind the names on the Parish Memorial. "I started wondering -- who was that person? What was his life like? Once I started researching the men I immersed myself in a time that has gone. I thought it would be fascinating to bring something back to the community."

Their families were all connected with the St Luke's area.

The exhibition features photographs of the soldiers, the local area and artefacts from the Military Museum in Preston.

A computer facility is also available for families who want to research their relatives. The exhibition is open today until 4pm and from 1pm to 4pm tomorrow.
