A YOUNG Conservative group from London today withdrew its invitation to Mr Enoch Powell to address it this afternoon - because it became apparent that he planned to use the occasion to pledge his support in keeping the Labour Government in power.

THERE was good news for ex-Far Eastern prisoners of war last night. Speaking at the third annual reunion of the Bolton branch of the Far Eastern Prisoners of War Association, Col. P.D.J. Toosey gave the encouraging news that as far as their claim for compensation was concerned, the per capita basis was likely to be greater than had originally been anticipated as the United States had waived their claim. He also told the 250-strong assembly it was expected that the payment would be paid next year.

November 10, 1876

AT the new County sessions room on Monday, Richard Aldred, Manchester, was charged with riding on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway between Manchester and Farnworth on the 8th September. Mr Hall conducted the case.

Defendant was a passenger from Manchester to Bolton, and the train stopped at Moses Gate for the purpose of collecting tickets. He was in a second-class carriage, and upon the collector asking for his ticket he produced the return half of a ticket issued on the 23rd August. Defendant pleaded that he had the right ticket in his pocket, and he did not know but he had given it to the collector. Fined 10s and costs.

THE offertory at St Paul's Bolton, on Sunday morning for the aged father of the late Rev. T. Wallace, first incumbent of the church, amounted to £21 10s 10d. It included 2s in postage stamps sent by a working man who had listened with advantage to Mr Wallace.
