LANCASHIRE'S Wise Monkey Theatre Company presents S for Sugar at the Robert Powell Theatre, Frederick Road Campus, University of Salford, on Friday and Saturday, December 7 and 8.

Based on real life events in Salford, this is a new play by local playwrights Pat and Roy Greenhalgh.

It follows the life of Hazel in the months leading up to the fateful crash of a Lancaster bomber, call sign 'PB 304 - S for Sugar', on to Littleton Road playing fields in July 1944.

Lucy Bamford, a local clairvoyant from Regatta Street who died as a result of the crash, had predicted her own death.

The play is based on original research and interviews with those who knew the characters, including Lucy's grandson Joe.

His book The Salford Lancaster was the inspiration behind the drama.

S for Sugar, which is about community, superstition and the age-long universal search for love, is set against the background of wartime Salford.

It is a drama with video projections and period costumes. It brings to life the story of one girl's struggle to embrace the future in those frightening and uncertain times.

The premiere performances are a partnership between professional artists and the local community, along with financial support from Manchester Airport, North West Arts and Salford City Council.

The play is directed by Dinos Aristidou.

A theatrical globetrotter, he has recently worked on projects in Vienna, the USA, and, nearer to home, The Lowry.

Tickets, £4 and £2, concessions, from 0161 295 3248.
