PEDAL power challenges horse power when BEN Girl of the Year Joanne Walker and her sister, Gayle Binns, tackle a charity trek.

On Saturday, November 24, the two plan a gruelling 20-mile off-road journey by bike and horse to raise money for the Bolton Busting Breast Cancer Appeal.

They plan to swap "steeds" halfway around the route, which will take them from Smithills around Rivington, Belmont, Bromley Cross and back to Smithills.

And they are looking for sponsors to encourage them. The sporty sisters are looking forward to the event in the saddle. Joanne, aged 29, is an outdoor pursuits instructor when she is not at work as a special needs assistant at St James's School in Farnworth.

And Gayle, aged 27, a piano teacher, works at the Regent Park municipal golf course in Lostock and enjoys running.

Joanne wants the trek to be only the first in a series of events: "I'd love it if BEN readers could give me ideas for other challenges," she said.

"I would like to do an abseil to conquer my fear of heights. But for starters, Gayle and I will do the sponsored ride."

Joanne added:"I want to do something for the Bolton Busting Breast Cancer Appeal because it is such a worthwhile cause."

Anyone who would like to sponsor them, or has ideas for further challenges, can write to: Challenge Joanne, Angela Kelly, Features Dept, Bolton Evening News, Churchgate, Bolton BL1 1DE. Cheques should be made out to the Bolton Busting Breast Cancer Appeal.
