CONTROVERSIAL plans to demolish a 19th century house and build 18 apartments in a conservation area in Heaton have been put on hold.

Bolton Council planners deferred their decision on the proposal by Elite Homes North Ltd to demolish a house at 334 Chorley New Road and erect two apartment blocks.

Along this stretch of the road, the properties are mostly large detached or semi-detached 19th century houses with substantial gardens.

The proposal has been met with opposition from Bolton and District Civic Trust which says it would mean the loss of a building which makes an important contribution to the unique character of the conservation area.

Some nearby residents have also written objection letters fearing over-development and road safety problems.
