RADCLIFFE'S Brian Booth and Mike Howard notched up a great result over the fells on October 27 and 28.
The Karrimor International Mountain Marathon is a top class annual fell running event. The course is different every year, but the format of runners competing in pairs, carrying food and equipment for camping out overnight, remains unchanged.
This year's event was at Largs in Western Scotland, and the two days running went over the expected mountainous terrain, with a great deal of heather and peat bog to be negotiated.
Two-hundred-and-forty-three teams completed, with Brian and Mike a respectable 40th overall. Even better than that, they ended up in 11th place among the veteran teams -- not bad at all in this level of competition. Everyone feels the strain after the first day of racing, (this pair were out for five hours 17 minutes on day one), and it was very much to their credit that the Radcliffe runners were fourth fastest among the veteran teams on day two, (only running for three hours 43 minutes this time!). This enjoyable trip North of the border left the two club stalwarts cock-a-hoop after putting up such a good showing.
