A WOMAN died after suffering serious injuries as she crossed a Bolton road today.
The 47-year-old pedestrian was crossing Crompton Way, near its junction with Firwood Grove, at 6.30am when she was involved in an accident with a car.
Eye witnesses ran to help the injured woman who was in the carriageway after the accident. She was unconscious and suffered serious head and chest injuries.
The middle-aged mother is believed to be from the Tonge Moor area of Bolton but this lunchtime had not been officially identified. Her family were at the hospital.
Paramedics were sent to the scene within minutes of the accident. She was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital.
Police immediately sealed off Crompton Way, from Firwood Grove to Thicketford Road, for police accident investigators to carry out their work.
The road was closed until 8.30am, leading to severe congestion in the area.
The male driver of the Vauxhall Carlton involved in the accident, who was travelling to work at the time, was unhurt, but shocked.
Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact the Bolton Police Traffic Unit, tel: 0161 856 5972.
