AFTER yet another fatal road collision in the Bolton area, I feel readers should begin to analyse why so many collisions continue to occur.
Recently, a comprehensive survey in Belgium established that the majority of drivers believed that drinking was the major cause of serious road collisions. However, according to the police, at least 75 per cent of injury collisions were due to excessive speed.
In the 10 weeks that I have lived in Bolton, I have been surprised by the speed achieved by many drivers in the town and by the reluctance to stop on red lights. I appreciate that congestion contributes to this rushing around, but, unless we can change our attitudes, nine people will continue to die every day on our roads.
