THE Bolton grandson of a soldier who fought in the Battle of Spion Kop was invited to a special unveiling at Kimberley Barracks.
An oil painting depicting a scene from the famous campaign for the Relief of Ladysmith which took place in January 1890 during the Boer War has been hung on the walls of the officers' mess.
It was commissioned by the Colonel of the Lancastrian and Cumbrian Volunteers, Lieutenant Colonel David Sanderson. Among those present at the unveiling was Captain Bill Haworth, a permanent staff administration officer with the LCV, whose grandfather fought in the battle.
Capt Haworth from Lostock said: "Being a member of the Mess here, it's nice to be able to look at this fine painting and reflect on the fact my grandfather was present at the battle with the Lancashire Fusiliers."
