A NEW development is set to take shape in Prestwich after Richardson Developments and MCO Developments joined forces to buy the empty Sainsbury's store in the town.
They are planning to develop a mixed retail and leisure scheme on the site.
Lee Richardson of Richardson Developments said: "The existing retail provision in Prestwich is poor and does not meet the requirements of the local shoppers.
"Our proposals together with the new M&S store and the initiatives of Bury Council will create a considerable transformation and revitalise the area."
"Initial interest from new retailers to locate into Prestwich has been very encouraging and is a direct result of the combination of improvements that are proposed."
The company is considering a range of leisure uses at first floor that includes a health and fitness club although these proposals are not finalised.
A detailed planning application is to be submitted in the next few weeks for approximately 2,500 square metres (27,000 sq ft) retail and 2,700 square metres (29,000 sq ft) first floor leisure/retail.
Bury Council leader, councillor John Byrne, said: "We see Richardson's proposals as another significant step towards the total regeneration of Prestwich town centre. Richardson are a national retail and leisure developer and are known for their ability to perform. We are delighted they have decided to invest in Prestwich".
Prestwich Area Board Chair, Councillor Gill Campbell, said: "This is wonderful news for the town. Hard work is now beginning to produce results and we are really optimistic about the future."
