THE ONLY subjects which seem to get written about over the past months are those that concern doom and gloom, or drugs and prostitution.

While I agree that all of the above subjects are matters of public concern, I felt that it was time that another more pleasant, yet equally important subject was aired.

The subject I write about is community spirit. On Thursday, November 15, out organisation held a canopy sale on Victoria Square. We had with us two large flasks of hot water, tea, coffee, milk and sugar, plus cups to drink out of. Nothing in that to write home about, but when we had used most of the water, one of the members went to the King Burger Cafe to ask if they could fill the flasks with hot water.

Not only did they fill the flasks for free, the owner Mr Eddy Simsek asked how we were going to wash the cups. Without further ado he said that if we took them over he would put them through the dishwasher, which he did, twice during the day.

On behalf of BASSET and its members, I would like to thank Mr Simsek and his staff for their support and help during a long yet profitable day.

While on the subject of thanks, I would like to thank all our hard working members for their help, both before and on the day; the end result was £573 for our social fund. I would also like to thank all the members of the public for their support.

Finally, would the lady from McDonald Avenue, Farnworth, who paid us a deposit on the twin-tub washer, please ring the number shown, as you did not tell us what number you live at.
