Walmsley Church Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, Parish Hall Theatre, Egerton: THIS is a thoroughly enjoyable comedy featuring a pleasant array of characters, all of who were portrayed with style last night.
It is set in the drawing room of a middle class home in Hampstead, as the Fordyce family gather to prepare for a Boxing Day wedding.
The action takes place at a time when class distinction is still apparent, so when the working class Mrs Puffin arrives unannounced from Clapham Junction, she causes immediate consternation.
This descends into sheer panic as the larger than life character reveals the content of her dream in which the Fordyce wedding does not take place.
As each of her premonitions begin to come true the panic -- and hilarity -- grows and emotions are heightened.
The cast bring to life this drawing room comedy. Yvonne Neary is brilliant as Amelia Puffin. Played with a twinkle in her eye, and faultless cockney accent, she remains the wide eyed innocent as chaos ensues around her.
Steven Roberts as the mischievous Nicholas Fordyce plays his character with obvious relish which is a delight to see, while fathers of the bride and groom, Ernest Dawson and Paul Brennan are terrific in their roles.
First night jitters caused several lines to be forgotten -- the only problem encountered on an otherwise faultless performance.
Overall the company manages to turn this relatively simple, straightforward comedy into a lively and most enjoyable night out -- little wonder then that there has been such a demand for seats. Tonight and tomorrow the performance is played as part of a theatre dinner evening, a lovely idea which has attracted full houses.
