RESIDENTS are being warned against thieves stealing wheelie bins to use on crime sprees.
There has been a spate of thefts from homes across Bolton, particularly in the Farnworth area.
Thieves use to wheelie bins to either climb on top to get into property or to store the goods they have stolen.
A large number of items can be put inside the containers such as a television, video, DVD player, microwave and computer.
Sgt Bill Crittenden of Bolton central police urged residents to report anyone they see acting suspiciously.
He said: "Often thieves are seen wheeling the bins through residential areas and no one says anything or questions what they are doing.
"Whatever the reason they are taking the bins for, it is not an innocent one.
"The only people who should be moving wheelie bins are the people who live at the properties or the bin men on collection day.
"A burglar can only carry a limited amount of items but with a wheelie bin, they can take all the electrical goods.
"It is particularly busy at this time of year because the thieves are out 'Christmas shopping'.
"They know people are out buying presents and they know where you leave them, either at home or on display on the back seat of cars."
If you suspect a wheelie bin is being stolen or have seen anyone acting suspicious in your area call the police in 0161 872 5050.
