ENOUGH nappy waste to fill a football stadium -- 1,750 tonnes -- is produced in Chorley alone each year!
That messy statistic was revealed this week as local environmentalists try to get to the bottom of a problem by pinning their hopes on reusable nappies.
Chorley Environmental Forum, in partnership with the council, is offering 20 families across the borough the chance to participate in a month-long project using free reusable nappies.
Seventy nappies will be supplied each week. Once used they can be placed in a nappy bucket to be collected by Happy Nappy Laundry Service, Blackburn. The company will deliver and collect the nappies as well as supply parents with a nappy bucket and liner.
All families involved have to do in return is commit to the project for a month and record how it goes in a weekly diary.
Councillor Cath Hoyle, executive member for environmental issues, said the aim was to reduce waste that goes to landfill and encourage parents to use breathable, reusable nappies.
