The Proclaimers are those two geeky looking brothers who burst onto the music scene in about 1989 with their song Letter From America. They were generally thought of as very untrendy and anyone who liked them was often held up to ridicule.
I was tied to the school gates upside down wearing nothing but a pair of small white Asda briefs for admitting I had the record.
However, it did not change my view. I still think they are great, basically because unlike your Travis, Oasis or (insert any other massive arena rock band here), they actually write about issues that concern them.
No vague lyrics about driftwood or wonderwalls, this is stuff like marrying a woman and then watching as she turns into her nagging mother. Stuff like asking why Scotland is ruled by England.
The brothers, Craig and Charlie Reid, may not look like Calvin Klein models but they can sure sing and some of their rasping harmonies have the rare quality of making the hair stand up on the back of your elbows.
Some cracking songs too, from Sean to Misty Blue, Let's Get Married to (I'm Gonna Walk) 500 Miles.
Why, they're such nice lads they even came into the audience at the end for a pint and to sign autographs. Bet Oasis wouldn't do that. (SC)
