MULTI-talented Stephen Wibberley of Bolton Harriers rounded off a superb year by ranking fourth nationally in the Under 15 Boys, 400m lists published this week by Athletics Weekly magazine.

The 14 year-old finished the season with a time of 52.15 seconds, which would be the envy of many a senior athlete.

In fact, it was this sort of form that got him to the English Schools 400m final last summer.

He was also well placed in the 800m listings with two minutes 4.3 seconds.

As if his track exploits over the shorter distances were not enough, Stephen has also managed a win and two third places in the Red Rose Cross Country League in recent weeks.

Stephen is a member of coach Jack Caldwell's training group at Leverhulme Park.

Jack is a popular and highly experienced coach and athletes under his guidance have had a number of successes in recent months.

Ian Bowles became European Catholic Schools 1500m Steeplechase Champion. Another success was 18 year-old Chris Iddon, who won the Plate Final 800m in a personal best of 1:53.8.

His training partner Christian Eckersley improved by over three seconds to run under 50 seconds for the first time with 49.5 seconds, and complete his transformation from promising relay runner to automatic choice.

Jack's grandson Ben Caldwell also had an excellent season whilst settling into life as a student at Loughborough University.

This culminated in a last-gasp victory in the 400m hurdles to get the club's promotion match win underway at Watford.

TOM Lancashire is an athlete who looks destined for big things.

The teenage runner, who is a member of Bolton Harriers, is now ranked as the second fastest 1500m runner in the United Kingdom after rounding off the season in style, winning the British Schools Under 17 1500m title.

Tom has been in superb form all year and is tipped for a glittering future on the track.

On the girls' side of the Harriers club, Kate Smith has had a great start to the Cross Country season, and Anna Lancashire had a season of great promise over 800m.

One athlete to recently join the group is Tim Ellis. Last weekend, when the rest of the club took a weekend off racing, Ellis competed as a guest in the South East Lancs League at a boggy Oldham, finishing an excellent third behind Trafford's Anthony Moran.

All members of the group are currently working hard towards even greater achievements next year.
