POLICE launched a Christmas campaign today to combat drink and drug-related Crime in Bolton.

The annual crackdown aims to create a safer environment for drinkers in pubs and clubs across the town.

Festive revellers will be warned that police will not tolerate any reports of anti-social behaviour.

Police also hope the campaign will help raise awareness of the dangers of drugs.

Revellers will also be warned never to leave their drinks unattended in case they are tampered with or "spiked". Police will also be using beer mats and display posters in pubs and clubs around Bolton in a bid to hammer home the Christmas message.

The campaign has been supported by members of Bolton's Pub and Club Watch schemes.

Mary Harrison, Greater Manchester Police's watch scheme administrator for Bolton, said: "We want people to enjoy the festivities but in a safe environment.

"Greater Manchester Police, along with Bolton's pubs and clubs, want to send out a clear message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and that offenders will be barred from those premises participating in the Watch Scheme.

"The aim is to create a safer environment in Bolton's pubs and clubs by encouraging safer drinking and to raise people's awareness of the dangers of drugs."

The crackdown was officially launched at the Red Lion pub in Wigan Road, Westhoughton.
