A BOLTON bowls league with more than 100 members has disbanded in protest over increased fees at municipal greens. Members of the Parks League, set up in 1909, voted to disband because they were no longer prepared to pay "unfair" fees which have increased by 200 per cent over the past two years.

THE Lostock factory of De Havilland Propellers, Ltd., is beginning to be called the workshop of the De Havilland Enterprise because, in addition to building propellers, the factory undertakes a large amount of high-precision machining work for the aircraft and engine companies within the group.
The four-wheeled bogie undercarriage units for the famous Comet jet airliner, for instance, are machined and assembled there.
It was recently estimated that Lostock-built propellers are in daily service in 36 countries throughout the world.
A SERIOUSLY injured tramp was taken to hospital in Oslo after leaping in terror from a speeding lorry which was carrying two coffins.
He had stopped the lorry in a downpour and begged a lift. On the way, one coffin lid rose and a voice asked: "Is the weather still bad?"
It was another hitch-hiker sheltering inside. But the tramp waited for no introductions.

THE Manchester stipendiary had before him yesterday week a further batch of men charged with falsely pretending to be physicians, doctors of medicine, or general practitioners; and fines varying from £2 to £15 were imposed, with costs. Five persons were yesterday week committed, in addition to those fined last week; and in all the cases an order was made for the destruction of the obscene handbills and pamphlets found on the premises of the defendants.
An immense quantity of handbills and pamphlets were seized by the police in their raid on the defendants' premises - Detective Caminada gave some amusing evidence. He went to Dr Henry and told him he wanted to consult him upon a pain in the heart and sweating of the hands from which he suffered. Dr Henry said his fee was 10s, which the detective paid him. Dr Henry told him he was to swill his head with cold water every morning, and rub himself dry, take a little brandy and water, drink port and sherry, and bitter beer at dinner time. He was to mix in company at night, and go to theatres and concert rooms; and ride outside omnibuses.
