MOTORISTS using a busy stretch of motorway face delays during resurfacing work.
A special low-noise surface will be used on the M6 between Leyland and Preston, described as probably the busiest part of the motorway network in Lancashire.
Preparation work on the £5.2 million improvement scheme was set to start on Wednesday, December 5, and continue until mid May 2002, with a break between Monday, December 17 and Thursday, January 3.
The work, which includes resurfacing the north and south-bound carriageways, and bridge repairs, will take place between junction 28 at Leyland and the junction of the M6 and M61 motorways.
The motorway will be reduced to two narrow lanes in each direction during parts of the work, and motorists are being urged to find an alternative route or use public transport where possible to avoid delays.
A speed limit of 50 miles an hour will be enforced by cameras, and electronic signs will tell drivers how many speeding motorists have been caught.
