TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill yesterday after a lorry shed its load near Bolton town centre.
The lorry, which belongs to scrap metal merchant Frank Barnes in Darwen, lost five large metal girders as it headed out of Bolton along Higher Bridge Street.
Some of the girders, which appear to have fallen off the vehicle after the canvas strapping became loose, ended up on the pavement and others blocked the left lane of the busy road.
No pedestrians were in the area at the time of the accident at 2.40pm.
Police had sealed off the area and a considerable tailback of traffic built up as far back as the town centre.
A crane belonging to the same company was brought to help reload the lorry.
