I AM writing to correct your negative and one-sided portrayal of The Haulgh, particularly in your edition of Friday, December 7. I have lived in the area for 13 years and have every intention of continuing to do so. Unlike your informants I have no objection to disclosing my identity.
The vast majority of residents in this area are entirely law abiding. We have two problems. Firstly, a small number of landlords regard their properties simply as a means of obtaining access to housing benefit income and do not care who lives in the house or what they get up to.
The second problem is a history of inadequate policing. We have a commitment from Chief Inspector Greene that we shall see a difference by March. We have, however, had promises before and we shall have to see if there are real and permanent changes.
The important point is that the law abiding and responsible majority in the Haulgh are not going to give up. The tiny minority who foul it up for others need to realise that we are staying and they are going.
