THE Last Post has sounded for Leigh Silver Band.

A decision has been made to end a tradition which began more than 80 years ago and this Christmas will be the last time band members play together under the proud old title.

Leigh Silver Band stalwart Harold Roberts said: "All our attempts to attract new members and, equally importantly, people willing to manage the organisation, have failed with the result that our band will cease to exist at the end of the year.

"All assets will be sold and, although a definite decision has yet to be made, it is likely that certain charitable organisations may benefit.

"Another possibility is a young players' scholarship in the band's name, to be awarded at the annual solo competition organised by the Preston District North West Brass Band Association.

"We'd like to thank the members of other local bands, in particular Bedford Band and Boothstown Band, who have helped out during a difficult year.

"Local businesses, Leigh Business Partnership and various social clubs in the area have also helped."

A nucleus of members are hoping to gather together to play in the town at Christmas and hopefully visit clubs as usual on Christmas Eve, which has been a tradition with Leigh Silver Band for many years.
