York Wasps 6 Leigh Centurions 48: A BLISTERING opening 24 minutes saw the Centurions rattle up yet another big league win and condemn the Wasps to a 26th successive NFP defeat writes Mike Hulme

Leigh's big guns all fired early on, blowing the shellshocked Wasps out of the water with four tries in the opening 15 minutes and a 30-0 lead with just over a quarter of the game gone.

Using the gale force wind to its full advantage, Leigh had the match sewn up virtually before York had touched the ball. Skipper Adam Bristow collected the first of nine Leigh tries inside 40 seconds and winger Eric Andrews went in for another for a 12-0 lead after only three minutes.

With Dave Bradbury, Bristow, Simon Svabic and Willie Swann pulling the strings the Centurions continued their demolition job when Andy Isherwood and Bristow went in for further tries and two more goals from Neil Turley made it 24-0 after 15 minutes.

Winger Liam Bretherton nipped in for another and Turley's touchline conversion put Leigh on course for a landslide victory.

But somehow York managed to hold out until until minutes into the second half when Vila Matautia's drive set up the position for Isherwood to drive through for his second.

Running into a gale and facing a for more resolute Wasps, Leigh did not have things all their own way after the break. A Scott Yeaman try and Jamie Benn goal opened York's account and it took a last-gasp ankle tap by Bristow to prevent another six-pointer.

But Leigh quickly rediscovered their composure and on the hour a second try from Andrews made it 38-6.

Leigh closed the game well on top again and grabbed two more tries in the final 12 minutes, Swann scoring from close in and then the same player setting up a fitting six-pointer for Bradbury.
