A DRIVE to expand the number of volunteers at Bolton Lads' and Girls' Club by more than a quarter has got off to a good start.

Dozens of would-be volunteers walked through the doors of the youth club's Bark Street HQ during its open day.

And Dave Kemp, staff development officer, said he was confident of boosting volunteer numbers from 170 to 250.

The initiative follows the Government's call to have 14,000 extra volunteers across Britain over the next three years.

Luke Smith, a 27-year-old from The Haulgh, was quick to sign up.

He said: "I want to give something to the community which I think would be worthwhile and rewarding."

Mr Kemp wants to attract people aged 18 and over to look after club users who range from primary school age to 21.

They include people like Stuart Midgley, a 20-year-old from Astley Bridge. He said: "I've been coming here for four years. It gets me out of the flat and meeting people. I have a great time."

Bolton Lads' and Girls' Club puts on a wide range of activities for youngsters including dancing lessons and circus workshops.

It is set to move to new premises on Spa Road, Bolton, by the summer.
